Aw, SarahJanet, it makes me so happy to hear from someone who loves it as I do! I know I did not even do it justice.

I did not discover the sequel until several years ago, and it did not catch on with me. Maybe I should give it another chance. I do love Kate so.

I have never read Kit Pearson. What would you recommend by her?

Meanwhile, the only other Jean Little book I read as a child (which I still have) (and also loved) was Mine for Keeps. I think it's time to give it another read.

SarahJanet

This is my favourite book of all time. I own three copies of it (one of which is this version!) and I still read it all the time. I love love love Jean Little. She and Kit Pearson were my favourite authors as a child.

Have you read the sequel?

Sarah

I'm also a huge Jean Little fan, but I'd never heard of this one.

Mine for keeps is great, but you should also read "From Anna", "Mama's going to buy you a mocking bird" and her autobiography "Little by Little" is excellent too.

I've read a lot of Kit Pearson too ... try "A Handful of Time" or the children at war trilogy .. the name escapes me at the moment, but its about three siblings who are sent to Toronto to escape London England during WWII.

Eliza

Sarah, From Anna definitely rings a bell -- and thanks for the other recs as well! I am excited to check these out.

Now go find yourself Look Through My Window! 40 years later, it still shines.

I was *just* looking up Jean Little books for my nieces! Jean Little and Gordon Korman.

And as far as Kit Pearson goes, I still have my copy of "A Handful of Time". It's a gooder.

I LOVE this review. I need to do something like this for a few out of print books!

SarahJanet

Yeah, the Guests of War Trilogy is great - The Sky is Falling, Looking at the Moon, and The Lights Go On Again. I SOBBED in the Lights Go On Again and it was the first time I ever cried in a book. I can read like, two pages of that book and cry.

The Daring Game is my favourite Kit Pearson, though. I freaking love that book and I really wanted to go to boarding school as a result of it.

Other Jean Little: From Anna is fabulous, and Listen for the Singing is the sequel, which I also like though not as much. I also really like Home from Far.

Eliza

Melissa: Do it! SarahJanet ladyloo, thanks for the Kit Pearson recs. My library has some of them, and I'll be checking them out immediately!

Though I recognize the cover, somehow I never read this book. Mine For Keeps, on the other hand, was one of my all-time faves as a kid. I really loved stories about kids with disabilities, like Mine For Keeps, Follow My Leader, Light a Single Candle, Wheels For Ginnie's Chariot, etc. Anyway, off that digression, I am totally going to read this one right away!

Love this review! I, too, love to look back at classic books and give my readers a "kick in the shin" to remind them that it isn't just the new stuff that's good, and some of that new stuff isn't even good.

Love this blog overall! I really appreciate the simplicity. I found you guys through Kidlitosphere, which I guess I joined a couple years ago but somehow had forgotten about.

Keep up the excellent work!

That sounds really good! A recipe that I also enjoy with meatballs (and is just as easy) is chili sauce (you know, that red stuff in a jar) and grape jelly. My Aunt makes these every year for Christmas Eve and they are my favorite!
