In addition to my fascination with camp books, I’ve always loved books about twins. Real-life twin sisters DeVillers and Roy have crafted a heap of fun with their novel TRADING FACES. The twin protagonists of this book couldn’t be less alike – we have Payton, the klutzy, overexcited fashionista dreaming of popularity and boys during [...]

SLEEPAWAY GIRLS by Jen Calonita

September 7th, 2009

(I wish this review was better timed, as this book takes place in the summer and was in fact published in May, but I love camp books year-round and I hope some of you do too.)
Ah, camp books. How I love you!
Sam’s best friend Mal is revolting head over disgusting heels in love for the [...]

a public service announcement

Do not attempt to drive while listening to the audiobook of THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN. What was funny in the book is even funnier when read by Sherman Alexie. I strongly urge you to listen to this audiobook safe within in the confines of your own home.

Whenever I see a book like this my brain automatically adds a subtitle to the title, like HOW TO GET RICH ON THE OREGON TRAIL: Kill some Indians, take their land, and reap the profits of Manifest Destiny! And then I have to remind myself that I am 37, and it took me a long [...]

two book trailers

August 14th, 2009

I was thrilled to receive links to great trailers for two books the Kidliterate staff loved – MY ROTTEN LIFE and KILLER PIZZA. Take a look!

Lahni is not only the black adopted daughter of a white couple, but also the only black girl at the exclusive private girls’ school she’s been attending for years. As the students get older, they seem to be more aware of how Lahni is different rather than more accepting of her place among them. Because [...]

There will never be another John Hughes movie. I am incredibly sad about this. However, books like this one – heirs to John Hughes’ oeuvre in all of the very best ways – go a long way toward alleviating some of that sadness.
This book may have the best title of any on the fall list. [...]

clarifying comment policy

August 10th, 2009

The comment policy here consists of two rules:
1. Don’t be a jerk to me or anyone else. Disagreement is fine; insults are not.
2. No anonymous comments. No exceptions. If you’re going to write a comment and get it posted here, you’re going to have to use an actual email address and at least some pretense [...]

Kara Martinez’s Mexican father was killed in an accident when she was eleven, and ever since then her mother has driven every ounce of evidence that he ever existed out of their lives. There are no signs around their house of their Mexican heritage – not even in the food they eat. Ever.  She expects [...]

I loved this book, and I think it’s mostly been missed. I am fairly sure it hasn’t been reviewed on any other blog, and I haven’t seen it talked about anywhere.  It’s one of those quiet little books that often slips through the cracks – just the kind of book that an independent bookseller will [...]
